Understanding Boiler Faults
Modern boilers are complex systems that monitor pressure, temperature, and combustion to keep your home safe and efficient. When something goes wrong, your boiler will often display a fault code or indicator light. These warnings help identify where the problem lies — but they’re not always easy to interpret. Below are some of the most common issues we encounter and what they usually mean.
Typical Boiler Faults
- No heating or hot water — could be caused by low system pressure, faulty valves, or a failed pump. Check your pressure gauge; it should typically read around 1–1.5 bar when cold.
- Boiler keeps switching off — often due to low water pressure, a blocked condensate pipe, or overheating protection engaging.
- Radiators not heating evenly — trapped air or sludge buildup may be restricting flow; bleeding or powerflushing may be required.
- Loud noises or “kettling” sounds — limescale or air pockets can cause uneven heating in the heat exchanger, leading to banging or whistling noises.
- Pilot light keeps going out — can indicate a faulty thermocouple, ignition issue, or problems with gas supply.
- Leaking boiler — may result from worn seals, pressure issues, or corrosion. Any leak should be inspected promptly by a qualified engineer.
- Fault codes or flashing lights — each manufacturer uses unique codes. Use our fault code guide to see if you can identify the issue. Consult your manual or note the code before calling; it helps us prepare for the visit.
Quick Checks Before Calling
- Check system pressure — top up to around 1–1.5 bar if low (only if you are confident and it’s safe to do so).
- Reset your boiler — sometimes a simple reset can clear temporary faults.
- Inspect the thermostat — ensure it’s calling for heat and batteries (if wireless) aren’t flat.
- Look outside — in cold weather, a frozen condensate pipe can stop the boiler; gentle warming or thawing may restore function.
If none of these help, or if your boiler displays repeated error codes, it’s safest to arrange a professional visit. Our engineers carry diagnostic tools and manufacturer-approved parts to identify and repair faults quickly.
